Golden Sample

Design Processes

The approved reference unit every production part is judged against.

In practice

A golden sample is a physical unit, signed off by the designer and the manufacturer, that embodies the accepted standard for colour, finish, fit and function. When a production batch arrives, it is compared to the golden sample, not to a drawing or a memory. It is the end of subjective argument about whether something is 'right'.

Questions

What is Golden Sample?

A golden sample is a mutually approved reference product used as the physical benchmark for quality control in production.

Why do you use Golden Sample?

Drawings do not capture how a finish looks or a button feels. A physical reference does, and it settles disputes.

How do you use/apply Golden Sample?

Review pre-production samples, correct until one meets spec in every respect, formally approve and sign it, keep controlled copies at the factory and at home, and compare every batch to it.

When do you use Golden Sample?

At the end of pilot production, before mass production is released.

Who uses Golden Sample?

Industrial designers, quality engineers and manufacturers.
