Prototyping

Design Processes

The creation of preliminary models or versions of a product to test and evaluate design concepts, functionalities, and user interactions. Prototypes can range from low-fidelity sketches to high-fidelity interactive models, providing tangible representations for user feedback and validation.

In practice

Utilizes scaled-down, functional models of a design to test and evaluate concepts, helping designers identify and address potential challenges. Prototyping is especially important during the early stages of product development, allowing for rapid experimentation, refinement, and validation of design ideas before committing to final implementation.

Questions

What is Prototyping?

Prototyping is making a rough, partial version of something in order to learn from it, rather than to deliver it.

Why do you use Prototyping?

It is the cheapest way to be wrong. A question answered by a prototype in a day would otherwise be answered by a product in a quarter.

How do you use/apply Prototyping?

Decide what question the prototype has to answer, then build only enough to answer it. Fidelity beyond that is waste.

When do you use Prototyping?

Whenever there is a real uncertainty that making something would resolve.

Who uses Prototyping?

Every design discipline, at every stage.
